New Show Me – Tell Me Questions Introduced

The vehicle safety questions known as “Show Me / Tell Me” that were originally introduced in September 2003 as part of the practical driving test have now been revised as of July 1st 2008 with the addition of new questions covering a wider range of topics.

The aim of the show me / tell me questions is to show the learners knowledge of general safety and maintenance checks by being asked combinations of questions originally covering the tyres, brakes, fluid levels, lights, steering and horn. The learner would respond by showing the examiner where the check would take place, and telling the examiner how the check would proceed.

As of 1st July 2008 the show me / tell me test questions will now cover the use of wipers, demisters, brake lights, fog lights, head restraints, ABS warning lights and the correct operation of relevant controls and switches.

Driving Test Fees Increased from April 1st 2008

Unfortunately not an April fools joke, the DSA’s increased test fees have now come into effect as of April 1st 2008 after being originally proposed in the Summer of 2007. Car drivers will see an increased price on the Theory and Practical test with Motorcycle test fee increases to follow in September.

The latest driving test fees for car drivers are as follows:

Theory Test: £30 (increase of £1.50)

Practical Test: £56.50 (increase of £8.00)

In a report by the BBC, the DSA Chief Executive stated:

“The Driving Standards Agency has to cover its costs in providing driving and riding tests to learners throughout the country.

“We are already planning to make efficiency savings of £4.8m this year and a further £6m in 2008-9, but to make sure we continue to offer an excellent service, the fees we charge must match our costs.”
